Swedish guitarist Per-Olov Kindgren was born in Bogota, Colombia and came to Sweden when he was 4 years old. In 1970 he moved to Copenhagen, Denmark and started studying with Torvald Nilsson in Helsingborg, Sweden and after three years he entered the Danish Royal Academy of Music where he studied the classical guitar for 7 years with professor Per-Olof Johnson and graduated with a final diploma in 1983.

Michael Lucarelli was born on August 18, 1959 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began his music education in 1973 on the electric guitar after hearing the group Led Zepplin. Later, Michael discovered the classical guitar and began his studies with Peruvian Guitarist Ricardo Linares. Mr. Lucarelli went on to receive his Bachelor of Music degree in 1989 from the University of Utah and his Master of Music in 1992 from the University of Arizona in Guitar performance.

Yesterday, July 23rd, marked two years that this blog has been online. I am kinda proud of all the talent that I have amassed in one location during that time for your entertainment, especially with all of my other Internet endeavors that I have going on that divides my time. Although the folks that frequent this small piece of the Web aren't generally talkative as is apparent by the absence of comments, I want to thank everyone who does take the time to drop in from time to time, as well as, extend a welcome and thank you to first time visitors.

If you have not visited my Solo Fingerstyle Guitar Midis & Tabs site, please take the time to check it out also. It's an ongoing project and one that you can contribute to if you're so inclined.

Kaori Muraji was born in Tokyo in 1978. Her first guitar lessons were from her father, Noboru Muraji, when she was 3 years old. She won the top prize at the 1989 Junior Guitar Contest, and was the winner of the Student Guitar Competition in two consecutive years 1989 and 1991. She was the youngest ever student to win the Leo Brouwer International Guitar Concours and Tokyo International Guitar Concours in 1992.

78-rpm recording time
The playing time of a phonograph record depended on the turntable speed and the groove spacing. At the beginning of the 20th century, the early discs played for 2 minutes, the same as early cylinder records. The 12 inch disc, introduced by Victor in 1903, increased the playing time to three and a half minutes. Because a 10-inch 78-rpm record could hold about three minutes of sound per side and the 10-inch size was the standard size for popular music, almost all popular recordings were limited to around three minutes in length... and know you know.

The following is a list of over 3600 titles recorded from my collection of 78 rpm records. Many of them are linked to MP3 files and will play what was recorded. No sound enhancement, just what was recorded. I hope to eventually have all the titles linked to music files, though that might take a while.

Right now, there are over 2,100 titles on this page linked to mp3's.

My guitar is an Ovation Electric Artist from 1978. My parents bought it for me as a gift when I was 17! It is a wonderful guitar, but one day I am going to buy a Baden or a McPherson. I also have a dream of building a 000-model in some exotic wood, Englemann spruce soundboard and Waverly tuners!

I record through a Blue Snowball USB mic straight into an Apple Macbook. I use Imovie' 08 and the sound is not manipulated in any way.

Historic pink label copy of the very first record of The Beatles to appear in the U.S. in April, 1962. Note the name on the label! This was a negligible hit in Germany and England in late 1961. Polydor records enlisted their U.S. affiliate, Decca Records, to promote this record in the U.S.. Not convinced that the name 'Beatles' was marketable, Decca complied with Polydor's suggestion to change their to 'The Beat Brothers' on the label with them being the backup band for Tony Sheridan.

A Kentucky-born guitarist who learned the instrument at an early age via the Atkins/Travis/Doc Watson heritage, Pat Kirtley admits to having been hard-bitten by the Irish music bug in the late 1980's after hearing guitarist John McCormick playing Celtic tunes in DADGAD tuning. He began exploring that tuning, and channeling significant creative energy into arranging Irish fiddle tunes and airs. "I am as fascinated by the fabulous wealth of musicality represented in the Irish folk-tradition as I am by the fact that I went through most of my musical life being totally ignorant of its existence," Pat remarks. The results of that work are represented in his body of work by arrangements of "Planxty Irwin" (in DADEAD tuning), the set dance "Rodney's Glory," and airs "Moran's Return" and "The South Wind," all appearing on his 1997 album Irish Guitar.

As I was reading Pat Kirkley's bio on Wikipedia I noticed he uses a Godin Multiac guitar. I can't say enough about Godin guitars as I own a Godin Multiac Grand Concert Duet. These days I rarely pick up any of my other guitars...

The Multiac Grand Concert is the Multiac for those players looking for a more traditional classical guitar feel. This is achieved with a design that unites a larger body with a Solid Cedar top and a neck that joins the body at the twelfth fret. The 2" width at the nut is slightly larger than the standard Multiac and more typical of the classical tradition. The result is the ultimate guitar for classical players that require amplified sound.

In this DVD David performs a wide variety of his compositions and arrangements of rags by Scott Joplin, James Scott and Joseph Lamb. Review

On the very first day of the brand new century, a baby boy is found on the Virginian, a ship that ferries immigrants from Europe to the USA. Danny Boodman, a coal room worker, discovers the abandoned newborn in a lemon crate in the first-class cabin. Not wanting to give the child up, Danny raises him hidden in the great ship's belly. He christens the boy Danny Boodman T.D. Lemon 1900, but the boy becomes known simply as 1900. Knowing nothing of the world beyond the coal room and his porthole view of the sea, 1900 is devastated when his adopted father is fatally wounded in a terrible ship accident. His identity is revealed to the captain who threatens to expose him to the authorities. But 1900 saves himself when he wanders into first class and finds a shipboard piano discovering he is a prodigy who can naturally play glorious, soulful music.

On Guitar Playing

On the subject of guitar playing, I'd like to offer a few general comments that relate to my own playing and musical interests, and might be helpful to you or stimulating to your thinking about music.

In the course of rendering music that is meaningful to me, I like to exploit the special attributes of the guitar--those that distinguish it from certain other instruments (in some cases, for example, the piano; in others, the harp). I use vibrato and sustained notes, hammer-ons and pull-offs, string snapping, slides, harmonics, unison notes and string bends. I combine those techniques with arpeggios and cross-string picking, counterpoint, and walking bass lines. (Cross-string picking means basically playing sequential notes on different strings of the guitar, rather than on the same string.)

I play with a combination of flesh and nails, and use a thumb pick to give strength to my bass lines. The thumb pick brings ease to my arpeggiation across the strings, and forces my fingers to play with maximum power, to raise the overall volume of the instrument, and thereby to allow for a greater dynamic range in my playing. I find it appealing to play musical phrases "rubato" (with rhythmic flexibility), probably because of my background in a cappella choral singing. Playing freely lets the music breathe, and altering speed, attack and dynamics, as appropriate, help bring drama and urgency to the tune--which helps to maintain the interest of the listener (and the player!)

Here's a suggestion for your vibrato. Try working the fretted string back and forth across, rather than parallel to, the fingerboard, using only the fretting finger, without the palm or thumb of the left hand as an anchor in back of the guitar neck. Mastering this difficult technique can enhance one's playing greatly.

The Celtic harp (also called an Irish harp, lever harp, or folk harp) differs from an orchestral harp in two main aspects. The orchestral harp is larger and uses foot pedals to change keys. The Celtic harp uses levers attached to the frame to change keys and are smaller, sometimes small enough to hold on the lap, making them easier to transport. The sounds of Celtic harps will vary, depending on their size and the type of string they use.

It is used for the Shire music, especially the Hobbit/Rural Setting of the Shire Theme. A good spot to listen is when Bilbo tells Gandalf (over tea) that he thinks Frodo might come with him but he's still in love with the Shire.

January 24th, 1910 at Liberchies Belgium, Django was born into the open air, rambling lifestyle of his gypsy parents. At the age of eight, his mother's tribe settled near the belt of fortifications that surrounded the old Paris, near the Choisy gate. He never wore a suit or lived in a real house until he was twenty years old. These French Gypsies or Manouches were a world unto themselves, medieval in their beliefs, and distrustful of modern science. Django grew up in this world of contradictions, one foot in the bustling big city of Paris and the other in the age-old life of the nomadic gypsy. Though born into poverty Django had the soul of a nobleman and this natural elegance of bearing and attitude expressed itself in his music.

Manuel Barrueco (pronounced Mah-noo-éhl Bah-roo-éh-koh) is a Classical music guitarist. He was born on 1952 in Santiago de Cuba, on Cuba's southeastern shore. He has toured in the U.S., Europe and Japan, and serves on the faculty of Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland.

Manuel Barrueco began playing the guitar at the age of eight, and he attended the Esteban Salas Conservatory in his native Santiago de Cuba. He emigrated with his family to the United States in 1967, later completing his advanced studies at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, where he was granted a scholarship.

At the age of merely 22 he became the first classical guitarist to receive the Concert Artist Guild Award in 1974, attesting to the fact that before him, guitar music hadn't been universally accepted in classical music.

His first recordings aroused incredulous amazement about his skills and musical interpretation. Ever since, Barrueco has toured extensively, recently appearing in some of the world's most important musical centers, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Munich, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Rome, Copenhagen, Athens, Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, and Hong Kong. His name was given him by legendary classical guitarist Andres Segovia, who called him "Esteban" during his years of study with the master in Spain (1974-1978) and in the United States. Born Stephen Paul in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, son of a steelmill worker, Esteban saw his first guitar in a shop window when he was 8 years old. His uncle bought it for him and Esteban says, "It never left my hands."

Dufour's pieces are characterized by a highly percussive playing style, using slap and pinch harmonics frequently. Dufour shares many compositional traits with other fingerstyle guitarists such as Andy McKee, Craig D'Andrea, and Don Ross, especially in terms of his music's technical complexity.

Many pay special attention to the red bandana/scarf tied around the end of his guitar's neck, seen in most of Dufour's YouTube videos - he has stated in interviews that this is designed to mute any feedback from the strings at the top that might be picked up by the sensitive microphones used to record his music.

Currently, his primary guitar (the one in all the YouTube videos) is a Stonebridge Model 23 CR. - Wikipedia

It would seem that the theme running through today's post is one of friendship. Which, as I think about it, may be a good format to use when preparing posts, i.e., posting subject related material.

Speaking of friends... you've got a friend in me if you are scouting the Net for guitar tablatures. I have been working on updating my main website,
Guitar Man | Solo Fingerstyle Guitar Midis & Tabs by uploading new tabs and their corresponding midis. I feel the combination of the two is the best method to learn new pieces, by being able to hear the sheet music being played in MIDI format. I have also included links, both here in the sidebar and on the main website, to obtain a free TablEdit viewer. For those of you who are not familiar with TablEdit it is a program that allows you to see the actual tablature as well as, hear it simultaneously being played. That's just one small aspect of what the program does. Check it out at TablEdit Tablature Editor. You'll be glad you did.

Taylor's career began in the mid-1960s, but he found his audience in the early 1970s, singing sensitive and gentle acoustic songs. He was part of a wave of singer-songwriters of the time that also included Joni Mitchell, Tom Rush, Cat Stevens, Carole King, John Denver, Jackson Browne as well as Carly Simon, whom Taylor later married.
